MBBS, MS (General Surgery), FRCS (Edinburgh), MD (Neurosurgery), FRCS (Surgical Neurology)
Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spinal surgeon

Neurosurgery
The Trust’s Neurosciences Unit is the regional centre for the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with a wide range of neurological and neurosurgical conditions such as Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, head injuries, spinal disease, vascular disorders and tumours of the nervous system.
The unit has a strong reputation for providing high standards of surgical, medical and nursing care to patients across Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond. Building on its success and in order to meet increasing demands for the unit’s neurosurgical services, major investment has been made which has enabled further expansion of specialist services and the development of highly skilled specialist nurses.

Neurosurgery
Over 2000 neurosurgical procedures are performed each year by the 5 strong consultant team. All of our consultants have varying specialist interests and the unit covers all aspects of neurosurgical practice.
Speciality of the month – neurosurgery

My name is Mr Hussien El-Maghraby. I’m a Consultant Neurosurgeon at UHCW NHS Trust. My training and accreditation as a neurosurgeon was via the London University training scheme. I gained experience in working in a number of hospitals in London including the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, King’s College Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital.
My main clinical interest is minimally invasive neurosurgery, either head surgery or spinal surgery. When I talk about minimally invasive surgery, I mean that the surgical exposure is as small as possible and is safe to deal with the underlying medical problem.
It’s important to note that the advances that we make in neurosurgery are only made possible with the help of all the teams at UHCW. These include maxillofacial, radiology, head and neck surgeons, theatre staff, ear nose and throat, anaesthetics, intensive care and the staff nurses on the wards.
During spinal surgery, we use a system called ‘the matrix’ which is a system of probes that progressively open up tracks to allow removal of disc bulges. This may be combined with fusion of the spine through keyhole exposure. Recent examples that have taken place at the Trust of this type of procedure on patients are Richard Clutterbuck and Emma Bexson.
With spinal surgery most patients will be up and about one day after surgery, and will go on to leave hospital in 2-3 days and return to normal daily activities within a week or two.
With brain surgery we can remove large tumours through incisions of around 3-4 centimetres using microscopes, endoscopes and neuro-navigation (the same as having a sat nav for the brain!). Patients will leave hospital in three to four days after major surgery. We have had a recent examples of this type of surgery including Bob McCarrol and Ian Bradley.
I see neurosurgery becoming less invasive with the development of new technology and instruments, which will make live easier and safer for our patients.
