Dealing with Lower Back Pain

So apparently, I have arthritis in my lower back. A spinal disc (L5 disc) in my lower spine is deteriorating, so everything is super compressed. On top of that, I also have osteophytes, which means that the edges around the lower spinal bones are abnormally sharp. This equates to major nerve pinching, which cases a lot of pain and pain running up and down my legs.

The doctor suggested I do 3 things:
1. Start swimming
2. Sleep on a hard surface
3. Stop lifting heavy weights

We’ll see how everything goes

Lumbar Disc Herniation – Dr. Alfred T. Ogden

Ogden, M.D., M.P.H., the Director of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at The Spine Center of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, discusses surgical procedures to treat lumbar disc herniation, a condition where some of the material within a disc migrates outside (like the filling leaking out of a jelly donut) and presses on a nerve, causing pain.
